BIOGRAPHY
Natalie Gunn is an exceptional young talent from the Pacific Northwest. Her "clear, beautiful voice," "intelligent artistry" and "informed musicality" make for vibrant performances in concert, recital and opera.
She has been a featured soloist with many leading companies including the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Columbia Symphony Orchestra, The Oregon Mozart Players, Northwest Performing Arts, Portland SummerFest, the Olympia Symphony, and Portland Opera.
A truly versatile artist, her stage repertoire encompasses numerous operatic roles including Nannetta (Falstaff), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Blonde (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Morgana (Alcina), and Tytania (A Midsummer Night's Dream). Her roles in operetta and musical theatre range from Cunegonde (Candide) and Maria (West Side Story), to Polly Peachum (The Beggar's Opera), Josephine (HMS Pinafore), and Mabel (Pirates of Penzance).
Ms. Gunn has performed with the Internationale Bachakademie under the direction of Maestro Helmuth Rilling, and recently was an Adams Fellow Young Artist at the prestigious Carmel Bach Festival in California where she performed varied works from the Baroque repertoire under the tutelage of master teacher David Gordon.
She is the Northwest Regional Winner of the of the 2008 National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award, the national NATSAA Todd Duncan Award, the National Opera Association's Artist Competition, has been honored by the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Gerda Lissner Foundation.
Natalie Gunn was trained by the legendary Ellen Faull, and continues to work with Sheri Greenawald, Maestro Dean Williamson and Richard Bower. She holds a Master of Music degree from Portland State University where she studied under Ruth Dobson and worked with Marilyn Horne, Sherrill Milnes and Tito Capobianco.
PRESS ACCLAIM
| As Soloist in Concert: |
| "The final work was the largest and most challenging: J.S. Bach's Wedding Cantata #210. Written for soprano soloist and orchestra, it contains five recitatives and five arias. It is as demanding as most operatic music of the time, which means florid passages, dramatic recitatives and spun out legato lines. Natalie Gunn, a young soprano from Portland, seemed undaunted. She had an animated stage presence and a clear, direct vocal sound with some steel." |
Marilyn Farwell - The Register Guard - December 12, 2007 |
| As Adele in Die Fledermaus: |
| "Natalie Gunn's Adele sparkled with the dazzling agility a chambermaid needs to stay in the game." |
David Stabler - The Oregonian - May 3, 2004 |
| As Zerlina in Don Giovanni: |
| "Most notably Natalie Gunn as Zerlina; she was a natural on stage, her warmth and easy grace a match for her supple, flexible voice." |
James McQuillen - The Oregonian - May 6, 2003 |
