Equally at home in the orchestral, choral and opera worlds, Erin Freeman is the newly appointed Associate Conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Her responsibilities include conducting the popular intergenerational Genworth Financial Kicked Back Classics Series and Kicked Back Classics - CLUB, leading the Wachovia Securities Pops Series, and artistic direction for the Symphony's education initiatives including its four youth orchestras. In addition, she is the James Erb Choral Chair as Director of the 130-voice Richmond Symphony Chorus.
No stranger to Central Virginia, Dr. Freeman was formerly Music Director of the Richmond Philharmonic conducting the 70-piece orchestra and garnering attention from WCVE, Richmond's National Public Radio station which broadcast numerous concerts, and from the National Endowment of the Arts who supported the orchestra's outreach initiatives with generous funding.
An enthusiastic champion of music education for all ages Dr. Freeman has served as Director of Orchestras at the critically acclaimed Baltimore School for the Arts, lecturer for the National Philharmonic and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Resident Conductor at Peabody Conservatory where she taught in the choral, orchestral and opera departments. Dr. Freeman was Music Director of Collegium Vocale, a competitively auditioned choral ensemble located at Emory University in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. As a past guest conductor of the Savannah Symphony Orchestra she conducted outreach concerts, young people's concerts and joint choral-orchestral performances.
The press has described her conducting style as "Dynamic but Grounded" and "Sensitive," while audiences have deemed her "inspiring," "animated," "entertaining," and "thoroughly charming."
At the age of seventeen, Dr. Freeman was accepted as the youngest member of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, under the direction of the late Robert Shaw, and continued that association singing with the Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus and the Robert Shaw Memorial Singers. With a voice that the Boston Globe called "Virginal of timbre, pure of pitch," Dr. Freeman has performed as concert soloist under the batons of Mr. Shaw, James Conlon, and Ann Howard Jones, and on the opera stage as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Mlle. Silberklang in The Impresario and Belinda in Dido and Aeneas.
Winner of numerous awards, including the Peabody's Baltimore Music Club Prize in Performance and the Women's Philharmonic conducting scholarship, Dr. Freeman received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Northwestern University, a Masters degree in Conducting from the Boston University School for the Arts, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting with Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar at the Peabody Conservatory. Previously, she studied and performed with Robert Shaw, Helmut Rilling, Robert Spano, Jonathan Carney and Murry Sidlin.

"Erin Freeman, the Richmond Symphony's new associate conductor, has inherited the Kicked Back Classics casual concert series from a string of maestros with highly varied inclinations; but she seems well on her way to making it her own.
Garbed in red and black, accessorizing with a demon's tail, leading a post-Halloween show in Toad's Place, a downtown nightclub that generally throbs to rock bands, Freeman proved to be both a genially energetic host and a concert programmer who garnishes fun with substance and subtlety." |
Letter V - Nov 2, 2007 |
|
"Erin Freeman, associate conductor of the Richmond Symphony, capably handled her duties as conductor and as affable emcee and knowledgeable interpreter of the works. Her natural rapport with the audience and players worked well for the casual concert. The highlight of the evening was Heinrich Biber's 'Battalia,' an eight-movement work from the 17th century that incorporates innovative sound devices and polytonality." |
Lisa Crutchfield - Times-Dispatch - Oct 6, 2007 |

"Guest Conductor Erin R. Freeman obtained unusually rich and lyrical playing from the orchestra." |
Clarke Bustard - Richmond Times-Dispatch, November 3, 2003 |
|
"On the podium, Freeman is dynamic but grounded. She remembers what her roll as conductor entails. Beyond the technical aspects comes much more - setting the tempo, expression and interpretation, but most importantly, listening." |
Paula Williamson - Savannah Morning News, March 3, 1999 |

"Erin Freeman keeps ego out of conducting the Richmond Philharmonic."
| ||
| ||
| ||
Freeman is multitalented too. Trained as a singer, she grew up in Atlanta and was the youngest member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus under the direction of the late Robert Shaw. She realized then that what she loved about music was the ensemble. Now at the end of her second year with the Philharmonic, Freeman recently received her doctorate of musical arts in orchestral conducting from Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. That's where she saw an ad for a job opening at the Richmond Philharmonic. Freeman, along with four finalists, had to run weekly rehearsals and give a concert before she was finally offered the position here. "I really got to know the orchestra and members," she says. With Freeman as the Philharmonic conductor, and Sarah Hatsuko Hicks as the associate conductor of the Richmond Symphony, Richmond has become a hotbed for the hard-to-find woman orchestra conductor. "I think conducting requires a certain kind of ego, the kind of ego that women are taught to suppress because we're caregivers," Freeman says. "But you have to be decisive as a conductor and get over the fact that not everyone is going to agree with you." Freeman seems to have her ego under control. "I like the way what I do is a group effort," she says. "It's not just about me. It's about all people giving of themselves." Next year, Freeman takes Richmond on a tour of the world. In the fall, the Philharmonic's program will feature Russian composers Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff. In the winter, Spanish works will be performed. The spring will bring works by French composers like Debussy and Ravel. Preconcert lectures and interactive performances will also help the music become more accessible to everyone next year. "For example, in the French program, we'll talk about how the French language influences rhythm in music," Freeman says. These tactics all work under the mission of the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra: to promote the art and appreciation of classical orchestral music for audiences of all kinds and give local musicians the opportunity to develop and show off their orchestral talents.
